The history of La Calma

Named La Calma, the original piece of land -1.1 acres, 4,451 square meters, or 0.45 hectares- was purchased by the family in 2005 and thoughtfully developed into three unique architectural spaces.

The first to be built was “La Casa Española”, now known as “Amparito” in honor of a member of the family. It has a suite, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a dining space, and spacious outdoor areas with BBQ facilities, hammocks and a swimming pool.

Construction of “La Casa de Bambú”, the second home, on the upper part of the finca, began in late 2006. Its design incorporates doors, windows and reclaimed materials from the former downtown Medellín residence of the renowned Antioquian writer Tomás Carrasquilla, along with bamboo and guadua sourced from Colombia's Eje Cafetero, the country's coffee-growing axis.

Built in 2010, the third building holds two flats with two suites: “La Maria”, and “La María 1”, dedicated to the memory of the family's mother and grandmother, and to the many relatives who share her name.

Endemic plants and fruit trees were planted with the intention of attracting the largest number and variety of wild fauna, so that by the time the houses were finished the vegetation had grown enough to provide coolness on warm days and to offer shelter and food for birds and other animals.
