Visiting the Finca and Habana Vieja Hotel
- Are the facilities accessible?
A few of our spaces are accessible, though our hillside setting in the Andes presents natural terrain challenges. The finca features uneven ground and stairs throughout the property.
To ensure there are no surprises during your visit, we strongly recommend reaching out to our team before booking your trip. We are happy to guide you toward the best options.
- Can I bring my own pets?
No, for safety reasons, guests are not allowed to bring pets.
- Does La Calma have pets?
Yes, there are dogs, cats and birds on the finca.
- Is La Calma somewhere to party?
Absolutely no! We have a zero-tolerance policy for drug use, excessive drinking, and environmental damage. Once there, you will be in an eco-friendly setting in the Andes where you will be asked to use recycle bins.
Breaking this policy means being asked to leave immediately, without a refund, and possibly a fine.
- Can I invite extra guests once I am in la finca, without pay and approval?
No. The finca is for registered guests only. You are not allowed to invite extra guest or anyone who is not on the booking to visit or stay over. Breaking this rule can mean being asked to leave immediately, without a refund.
- What is the policy regarding linens?
La Finca enforces strict hygiene standards, ensuring all linens and towels are fully replaced between stays. During multi-night stays, we change sheets and towels every three days.
Guests are welcome to request daily changes at any time. To support our eco-friendly practices, hanging your towel signals that you will reuse it, while leaving it on the floor means you would like a fresh one.
- What is there to do near La Calma?
There are plenty of things to do
- Tours of coffee, and cane sugar farms where you can watch panela being made.
- Walks out to see the other fincas
- Hiking
- Visit waterfalls in Vereda El Barro en Girardota
- Visit towns of Barbosa, Copacabana , Girardota, and Veredas (neighborhood/district) as El Barro, El Totumo, Juan Cojo, Manga Arriba and Santa Ana.
Getting La Calma
- Which airport should I choose for my flight?
Choose José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) for all international arrivals and departures. While Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH) is located right in Medellín, it only serves regional and domestic routes within Colombia.
- What is the address of La Calma, how do I get there?
La Calma is located in Vereda El Totumo (parte alta) in the municipality of Girardota, Antioquia, Colombia. Because our Finca is set in a rural Andean area, it is identified by its local neighborhood name rather than a traditional street address, making it very easy to get lost if traveling on your own.
We strongly recommend arranging your arrival directly with us. Your stay includes full round-trip airport transfers with our family’s trusted driver. Send us your arrival and departure flight details after booking, and we will ensure a smooth, welcoming ride directly to the Finca.
- Which airline should I choose when flying from the US?
You have plenty of great airline options heading into José María Córdova International Airport (MDE). Most flights route quickly through hubs like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, or Newark. Look for routes on American Airlines, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, LATAM Airlines Group, or United Airlines

- Can I visit Medellín during my stay?
Absolutely! Medellín is easily accessible for a day trip. You can head into the city in the morning and return to the Finca in the evening. Because local traffic can be heavy, we strongly suggest avoiding rush-hour travel in both directions.
If you prefer to spend a night or two exploring the city, we recommend staying at Habana Vieja, a family-owned hotel located in the popular El Poblado neighborhood. It offers a cozy; bohemian vibe filled with Cuban-inspired decor.
Rates are typically, $40 to $50 per person, per night (subject to change).
Our team will gladly coordinate all your bookings and private transportation. Ask us about our combined stay packages for guests spending time at both the Finca and hotel!
Booking and budget
- I work for a nonprofit and have a limited budget. Can I still visit?
Very likely, write to us and we will try to make it work. It helps if your email explains:
- What you are asking for.
- Whether you are traveling alone, and if not, how many people is coming with you.
- What you can pay per day, per person, or as a whole and for how many days.
- How many days you would like to stay, and which dates.
- The name of the non-profit you work for, and its website.
- Do we have your permission to verify that you work there?
- My budget is tight, what can I do?
If you are a non-profit, work with or are related to a non-profit organization, we would love to support you. Please contact us prior to booking. We consider requests on a case-by-case basis to help make your visit to La Calma possible.
